     4. Februar 2021
     16:00 - 17:00

  • A common engineering practice is to use design fires for the simulation of the smoke and fire spread in a compartment. Besides the ease of the definition of the target heat release curve, no material properties are needed for the flame spread modelling. However, the downside of this approach is, that the result, i.e. the development of the fire, here particularly the heat release rate, is pre-defined and thus environmental effects, like ventilation, heat feedback or extinguishment systems can not be dynamically taken into account.
  • In this talk, the fundamental approaches for a self-consistent modelling of the fire development and flame spread are outlined. As many of them depend on empirical data, e.g. specific heat release rates or material parameters, a few selected experimental methods are discussed. Using cable fires as an example, an approach to model flame spread based on material properties is demonstrated and compared to other methods. Especially, the application of the inverse modelling framework PROPTI is presented.
